Q7,Does the runner of Francis turbine produce negative pressure during operation? If the negative pressure will be generated, where will the negative pressure be generated, and how much range should we choose the measuring instrument?

When the turbine is in an operating state of no-load, low head, small load, high head, and overload and large flow, it will cause the dynamic load caused by pressure pulsation and hydraulic disturbance.

Since the Francis turbine is a fixed-blade hydraulic machine, when the turbine runs away from the optimal working condition, a large vacuum is generated in the area near the axis of the draft tube due to the rotating circumferential velocity of the runner outlet water flow.

The pulsation produces instantaneous negative pressure, the vacuum is not high, and it is not suitable for measurement due to its generation in the casing. Vibration, audio and other alternative measuring methods can be considered.

Due to the uneven gap between the rotating part and the fixed part of the turbine, the center of the wheel is deviated from the center of the unit. The gap between the fixed and rotating labyrinth rings of the wheel is constantly changing with the rotation of the wheel, and the water pressure in the gap changes accordingly.

When the flow of water flowing into the runner loses its axisymmetricity, an unbalanced lateral force occurs and pressure pulsations also occur.
